  2. Engineering builds APIs that always hit the database
  3. Traffic grows
  4. Pages slow down
  5. Ops adds caching aggressively
  6. Users complain:
    “Why is this data outdated?”
    “Why didn’t my change reflect immediately?”

At that point, caching becomes a band-aid, not a design choice.

Caching Answers Product Questions (Whether You Like It or Not)

Every caching decision silently answers product questions:

❓ How fresh does this data need to be?

  • Real-time (seconds)
  • Near-real-time (minutes)
  • Eventually consistent (hours)

❓ Who needs to see updates immediately?

  • Content editors?
  • Logged-in users?
  • Anonymous visitors?
  • Paying customers only?

❓ What happens when things go wrong?

  • Do we show stale content?
  • Do we block the request?
  • Do we degrade gracefully?

These are product decisions, not infra defaults.

Real Example: Content Publishing

Take a simple publishing workflow:

  • Editor updates a headline
  • Clicks “Publish”
  • Refreshes the page

If they still see the old headline:

  • They don’t think: “Ah, cache invalidation issue.”
  • They think: “This CMS is broken.”

  • Edge vs origin caching

Technology follows intent — not the other way around.

Caching Is a Feature, Treat It Like One

The best teams I’ve seen treat caching like:

  • Authentication
  • Permissions
  • Error handling

Planned early.
Discussed openly.
Revisited often.

They document:

  • Expected freshness
  • Known delays
  • Intentional staleness

So when trade-offs happen, they’re conscious, not accidental.

If users notice your caching, it’s already a product problem.

Caching is not about servers.
It’s not about Redis.
It’s not about CDNs.

It’s about what your product promises — and whether it keeps that promise at scale.

Treat caching as a product decision, and everything downstream gets simpler.

Ignore it, and no amount of infrastructure will save you later.
